Treatment of TCE in Wastewater by Ultrasonic Irradiation
Sohn Jong-Ryeul

Abstract
In this study, a series of ultrasonic reactions for removal of TCE, which had been selected as an example substance, were performed to provide the basic data for removal of the organic pollutants contained in the industrial wastewater by the ultrasonic irradiation. From these experiments, it was found that Cl was produced with reduction of TCE, and its concentration was increased for all times of reaction, and pH decreased from 7.0, the initial pH value of TCE solution, to pH 2.7, and more than 90% of TCE is removed within two hours in all reaction conditions taken in this study. In the experiments to measure the influence of reaction parameters on the ultrasonic reaction, higher reactivity of the aqueous TCE solution was shown when solution was acidic, and when acoustic intensity and the concentration of TCE in aqueous solution were high and reaction temperature is low. But effect of the acoustic frequency was not considerable. It was also found that the reaction is irreversible and first order reaction. As a result of these experiments, it was confirmed that the organic compounds contained in the wastewater may be removed effectively by the ultrasonic reaction, and that the refractory aromatic compounds of cyclic structure also may be possibly removed by the ultrasonic irradiation.
